Doolhof brings home gold
2009-06-04
DOOLHOF Wine Estate in Wellington’s Bovlei has brought home a gold as well as a silver medal from the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards in London. The newly released 2007 Signatures of Doolhof Malbec was awarded the gold medal while the 2007 Signatures of Doolhof Pinotage was awarded silver at this international competition, described as “the Oscars of the global wine industry”. This is a particularly powerful accolade for the 2007 Malbec, which was launched in early May this year in Cape Town. It is a complex, exciting wine with hints of mint and prune aromas. The grapes come from a small vineyard block on a rocky slope beneath Bain’s Kloof Pass that is windy and open to the elements. The grapes were hand-picked and the wine was matured in 50% new French oak barrels for 14 months. This delicious wine with its rich, dark purple colour has violets, spice and aniseed aromas. The tannins are firm and well integrated. It was bottled in September 2008. It is one of only three Malbec wines produced in Wellington. The 2007 Pinotage has layers of fruit, mocha and soft textures. The grapes for this wine were also hand-picked and the wine matured for ten months in French oak. The impressive dark purple colour with plum aromas has cassis, musk, black truffle and leather flavours. Like the Malbec, it was also bottled in September 2008. The 2005 vintage garnered gold at the 2006 Michelangelo Awards and was the Top National Pinotage at the Terroir Awards in 2007. The 2006 vintage was the Top National Pinotage at the 2008 Terroir Awards and received 3½ stars in the 2009 John Platter Guide. Dennis Kerrison of Doolhof Wine Estate is especially pleased that two of the Signatures’ range won medals at the Decanter Awards. “On Doolhof we strive for excellence, from our viticultural practices to the bottled end product. The fact that the recently released Malbec should have won gold at this leading competition, is testimony to the fulfillment of that vision,” he said.
