OWNERS of firearms who do not wish to renew their licences in terms of the new firearm legislation, have only until 30 June to dispose of them.

The firearm may be sold to a licensed dealer, handed in at the nearest police station for deactivation or destruction, or sold or donated to an individual.

In this case, the individual must apply for a licence, also by 30 June.

These firearm owners can now apply for a permit, at an additional R140 per year, to store the unwanted firearms in their safe, until the new owner has obtained a licence.
