Simondium beats log leaders
2009-06-25
IN a game that marked the opening of Simondium Rugby Club’s new home ground, Young Standards could not produce the goods to spoil their party. The new field in Simondium was prepared over the last few months, with the financial help of the current touring British and Irish Lion’s team, and opened on Saturday as part of the Lions’ legacy in the Drakenstein area. It was only fitting that the opening of the new field was held with the home team facing the current log leaders at that time, Young Standards. The game itself was played in front of a big and fanatic Simondium crowd and definitely lived up to the expectations of an active running game. Standards, however, tried to slow the game down, instead of reverting back to their talent in the back line. Simondium were up to the challenge and managed to stop every forward movement by Standards’ pack. Simondium replied with two tries by F Appolis and J Malangane, to only one try from Standards through Marchall Brown. The final score was 10-5 to Simondium. Standards’ third team won 22-0 and the second teams drew 6-6. Young Standards will face Lower Paarl this weekend on the Daljosaphat Stadium, with an after-match function directly after the game in the hall below the stadium.
