THE Boland athletes again brought honour to the Western Cape during the 2009 Southern Region Youth Championships that took place on 13 June in Tswane. The four athletes from the Boland that were selected to represent South Africa at the 2009 Southern Region Youth Champion-ships won three medals. The medals were won by Mzwandile Quashani from Mbekweni Athletics (silver; 200m; 22,01), Stephan Brits from Maties Athletics (LJ; gold; 7,14m) and Lionel Abrahams from Paarl Athletics (LJ; silver; 7,07m). The success of the Boland Youth Athletes followed closely after three Boland junior and senior athletes won three medals for South Africa at the Southern Region Senior Championships in May. Athletics South Africa has also recently announced that five Bolanders will represent South Africa at the 2009 CAA African Junior Championships from 30 June to 2 July in Mauritius. They are Dr Harold Adams (President of Boland Athletics) as team doctor, Raymond Julius (Head Coach Boland Athletics Centre of Excellence) as team coach, Melissa Hewitt from Paarl Athletics (100 and 200m), Ethan Floris from Maties Athletics (200m), Shaun de Jager from Maties Athletics (400m), Cornel Fredericks from Maties Athletics (400mH) and Luvo Manyonga from Mbekweni Athletics (LJ). In the meantime, Robert Oosthuizen from Malmesbury, the current World Junior Champion in javelin, became the 3rd Boland Athlete that qualified for the 2009 IAAF World Championships. Robert qualified during an international athletics meeting in Europe last week. The other two athletes from the Boland, who qualified for the 2009 IAAF World Champion-ships earlier this season, are Janice Josephs (long jump) and Janus Roberts (shotput).
