Mall hit by robbery
2009-07-02
PAARL Mall was once again the target of burglars this week. On Sunday evening at approximately 23:30, five men forced open a locked door to the Mall at the western (Woolworths) entrance. They then headed for Viljoens Jewellers and tried to gain entry to this shop. When they failed, they crossed over to Galaxy Jewellers, broke open the door with a crowbar, and filled their pockets with jewellery. Before the police reached the scene, the men had fled in their vehicle. Security cameras in the parking area of the Mall captured images of the fleeing men, and the registration number of their vehicle corresponds to that of a gold Toyota Corolla which is registered to a rental company in Kraaifontein. Police are following all leads which may lead to the perpetrators. The value of the jewellery which was stolen has not yet been released, but it is estimated to be quite a few thousand rands. Mall manager Lisa de Boer says that they are committed to ensuring a safe shopping environment for their clients. “We have stringent safety measures in place, but it seems as if die-hard thieves are still out there to by-pass them. “Fortunately these incidents have occurred when customers are not in the area, and their safety is our priority.” * Burglars previously hit Galaxy Jewellers in 2007, and Pep and Musica in 2008.
