Lifestyle farming at its best

Lifestyle farming at its best

ONE of the most historic farms of the Wellington valley is being developed into a unique lifestyle opportunity, offering a handful of buyers the chance to live among working vineyards, without the burden of actually farming.

The 53 hectare Leeuwentuin Estate is situated in the Bovlei Valley, some 5km east of Wellington.

The farm is being apportioned into six full title farmyards located amid the vineyards and fruit trees, which will all continue to be farmed as a single unit. Pam Golding Properties has the exclusive mandate to market the six smallholdings, which are priced from R4,27 million, inclusive of VAT.

The original Leeuwentuin farm was granted as a freehold property in 1702 by the then governor of the Cape, Willem Adriaan van der Stel. The first owner was a French Huguenot farmer named Daniël Jacob.

Since then, the farm has been established as a leading supplier of grapes to the Bovlei cellars, as well as having a portion dedicated to fruit farming – at present, guava trees.

The new lifestyle estate consists of three portions of five hectares each, and three portions of ten hectares each. Buyers will be allowed to build their own dream home on the land, in line with architectural guidelines which will strictly protect and preserve the individual owners’ privacy, as well as the overall rural atmosphere of the farm.

As well as acquiring the properties, buyers will also obtain a 10% share in the farming company which will continue to manage the vineyards and fruit groves to the highest professional standards.

PGP’s area manager for Wellington, Surina du Toit, says this is an ideal opportunity for those who want to enjoy the rural lifestyle, without any hassle.

“This is a win-win development,” she says, “with the excellent vineyards being preserved for future wine-making, and owners acquiring the tranquil rural lifestyle without having to get their hands dirty.

“It is particularly suitable for equestrians, as the farm’s communal facilities will include paddocks and stabling, to be managed by a Home Owners’ Association.

“Other facilities will include an old historic home which is to be renovated to create a wine cellar and tasting facility.”

PGP’s MD for the Boland and Overberg, Annien Borg, says the farm is located on prime agricultural land: “Leeuwentuin has an ample water supply thanks to the Leeuwentuin River, which forms the farm’s eastern boundary and creates a three hectare dam on the property. “The farm also enjoys spectacular views of the surrounding mountains – a real rural retreat, just a few kilometres away from the town and all its facilities.”
