Sewing through the night to help clothe the kids
2009-07-09
ON 17 and 18 July from 14:00 till 14:00 the Child Poverty Programme will be manufacturing track-suits for underprivileged children in the Drakenstein area using facilities provided by Paarl Mall. The workers will work for 24 hours in the Food Court at the Mall to finnish the track-suits. The Paarl district office of the Department of Social Development is a pilot site of the Bana Pele Provincial Child Poverty Programme, and they would like the community of Paarl to be part of their venture. This includes floor space, electricity and a network of support for those who will be active in the manufacturing process. Their plan is to provide children with suitable clothing, such as a track-suit, so that they can attend school in winter feeling warm, comfortable and ready to learn. Secondly, these track-suits will be made by community members trained in terms of the Bana Pele Programme, thus contributing to the skills development of primary caregivers, using existing community assets as a vehicle. It is hoped that this may develop into a sustainable sewing business. There will also be a marked box for the collection of used clothing at the Food Court area in the Mall where anyone can donate good used clothing that they no longer require. They are counting on the support of the people of Paarl in this effort. The track-suits will be distributed to 1 000 children from 100 crèches in poverty stricken areas of Drakenstein and Stellenbosch municipal areas at an event on Women’s Day on 9 August.
