TIME is running out for upcoming young scientists to finalise their entries for the regional competition of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in Stellenbosch. Entries close on Monday 3 August. Completed entry forms should reach the Institute for Mathematics and Science Teaching of Stellenbosch University (IMSTUS) in the Faculty of Education as soon as possible. This is the tenth year that the regional competition is organised by IMSTUS in co-operation with the University’s Faculty of Science. The regional competition will take place on 27 and 28 August at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. “The Expo for Young Scientists is an internationally acknowledged organisation through which learners are encouraged to do research,” says Expo organiser Erika Hoffman of IMSTUS. “Learners have an opportunity to identify problems, formulate hypotheses, gather and analyse data, make conclusions and convey their findings effectively to other people.” For the regional competition of the Expo, learners can enter in 25 divisions, which vary from physical or chemical sciences, technology, innovation and electronics, zoology or botany, climate change studies, medical and health sciences and agriculture to nutrition, mathematics, computer sciences and social sciences. Medals as well as special cash prizes sponsored by companies and Stellenbosch University will be awarded at the regional competition. The event is also used to choose 20 top projects to represent the region at the national Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in Pretoria, which takes place from 1 to 3 October.
