Arendse to gain valuable cycling experience in Europe

2009-07-09

CYCLING SA recently announced a National Road Cycling Squad of twelve junior riders to campaign in Europe.

One of these cyclists is 18-year-old Avery Arendse of the Neotel Yorkshire Cycling Academy in Paarl.

This is a great opportunity for Avery to gain valuable experience of international racing and to further build on his promising cycling career.

Avery has just finished his exams and flew out to the Netherlands on Tuesday to join his other team-mates in the national squad. The team will do a series of international events in Europe until the end of July.

Avery already had some good results in major junior competitions this year and he is definitely reaping the fruit from putting in the hard work and long hours. He finished second in the Western Province Open Road Championships, fifth in the SA Road Championships and was also the first junior cyclist in the Bela-Bela National Road Classic event during May.

Besides the European campaign, Arendse will also compete to be included in the national junior road team to participate at the Junior Road Championships in Moscow during August.

During the campaign in Europe, six selected South African junior riders of the 12-man squad will compete in two junior nation cup events. The squad will also compete in various other international races.
