College sculpts young minds

THE Paarl campus of Boland College, in association with various other training providers, played host to the Haw & Inglis Civil Engineering “Leadership School Programme” during the holidays. High school students (Grade 10-12) with mathematics, physical science and civil technology as their main subjects, were selected from eight high schools to participate in this learning intervention. The purpose of the programme was to expose these learners to the construction industry and to improve their communication and mathematical abilities – both essential skills to be successful in this particular industry. “Haw & Inglis has a long term view of providing employment to those who excel in this programme and show a genuine interest in the field of civil engineering. We also offer them bursaries to study in the civil engineering field at tertiary level,” said Chrystal Poole, Project Manager of Haw & Inglis. The selected students attend the various workshops and classes within the school holidays during which time they are also exposed to the more practical side of civil engineering. Their progress is continuously assessed and discussed with the various role players to determine whether the students are competent enough to proceed to the next level of the programme. “We are proud to be associated with companies such as Haw & Inglis Civil Engineering to assist them to sculpt young bright minds that will be a benefit to the country, as well as giving the students the opportunity to experience ‘Education in Action’ at Boland College,” said Alie Crook, Project Co-ordinator of Boland College Paarl Campus. Various training providers such as the Academy for Construction Skills (ACS), Tjeka Training Matters and Francois Scholtz participated in the facilitation of the programme.
