Race walkers excel in memory of coach
2009-07-16
TWO race walkers from Paarl, Francois de Jager and Elsabé Rudolf, excelled for Boland Athletics at the 2009 SA 20km Race Walking Championships in Oudtshoorn. Both athletes are a product of the well- known coach, Thys de Vries, who died tragically in April during the fire at the Paarl Print plant in Paarl. In the senior women’s race of the championships, Elsabé Rudolf of Boland Nedbank Athletics Club won the gold medal. Elsabe’s achievement is remarkable, given the fact that she started competing in Race Walking less than two years ago. “For athletes to perform in Race Walking at national level, it can take as long as five to seven years of intensive training,” says Dr Harold Adams, President of Boland Athletics. In the senior men’s division of the 2009 SA 20km Race Walking Championships, Francois de Jager of Boland Nedbank Athletics won the bronze medal.
