THE land to the east of RDP house 3972 in Buntu Street, on a koppie in Mbekweni, is still cordoned off after Lonwabo Vuka (17) discovered parts of human remains in a rotten coffin last Wednesday while cleaning up their yard. He was preparing to put up a fence.

Police and officials of Drakenstein municipality were on the scene early on Thursday to gather information and cordon off the area.

The National Heritage Council was alerted and an archeologist is expected to be sent to the site for further investigation.

All indications are that this site could be a cemetery on the site of a farm in the area, once known as Rust en Werk.

This incident raised concern and the community gathered around the house on Thursday. Some superstitious residents are not comfortable living so close to a grave.

A Police spokesperson of Mbekweni, captain Selma Bredenham, said that the police are not investigation the case, but are only overseeing the process.

The grave is thought to be rather old, as nearly all the wood of the casket had rotted away - only the handles were still intact.

“I have contacted the National Heritage council and we are now waiting for them to react,” she said.
