Who are these 'war veterans'?
2009-07-23
THERE is only one structure to which military veterans of MK may belong for the purpose of claiming pension benefits. I was elected provincial deputy secretary at the MK Military Veterans Conference held at the Allandale prison hall on 14 April 2007 to work for the social welfare of war veterans who made many sacrifices during the liberation struggle. Our mission was to get a proper database of war veterans in the area to ensure that they get pension and medical aid, grants, burial benefits and other social assistance. Now there is confusion because people are organising themselves in other groupings following the last election. It is amazing to see which people are suddenly claiming to be war veterans, long after the 2007 conference which they did not attend. There is no way that we can let the taxpayers’ money be manipulated by this group who seem to be unaware of the existing structure called the South African National Military Veterans Association.
