THE annual winter lecture series of the Drakenstein Heritage Foundation will be held on Thursday evenings (6 to 27 August) at the Hout Street Gallery in Paarl at 20:00. * On 8 August Coen Birkenstock will give an illustrated talk about the historic development of the Cape Town harbour. * On 13 August, architectural historian Dr Desmond Martin will give an illustrated talk on walking Long Street in Cape Town. His book by the same title is described as an easy reading guide to the historical buildings in this famous street, including Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco buildings. * On 20 August Prof Robert Shell will discuss the architecture of the ancient regime complex in Cape Town (the slave lodge, the church, company hospital and spinnery) and conclude with anecdotes about the slaves. * On 27 August Dr Peter Merrington, a founder member of the Heritage Council of the Western Cape, will talk about Dorothea Fairbridge and the idea of Cape heritage circa 1910.
