Tips on claiming your UIF payments
2009-07-30
There are a number of factors which cause problems when people claim unemployment benefits from the Department of Labour. This can lead to delays or even refusal of UIF claims. Pitfalls with Ordinary Benefits * Employers are not registered for UIF contribution * The reason for termination is lacking * The service periods overlap * The correct hours are not declared * There is outstanding information * The banking accounts are closed or do not exist * Payment is made into the bank account, but was rejected. Pitfalls with Illness Benefits * The date stated by doctor is not the same as the date of termination on the form UI 19. For example, the employer indicates the date of termination as 19/05/09, but the doctor states that the applicant is not capable to perform duties from 21/05/09. * The UI 2.7 form stipulating the salary paid during sick leave, is not completed fully and correctly. Pitfalls with Maternity Benefits: * The UI 2.7 form is incomplete * The Medical Practice number of the doctor is not stated. * Applicants apply before the baby is born. Applicants who avoid these pitfalls should not have any problems accessing their payments. Queries on applications from members of the public can be sent to gielie.germishuizen@labour.gov.za or eunice.bomvana@labour.gov.za or phone 021-872-2020. Klagtes kan ook verder na hoofkantoor aangestuur word na annalise.dutoit@labour.gov.za (stuur asb ’n afskrif aan die Paarlse toesighouers sodat ons kan opvolg).
Aziza Leitch (Department of Labour Paarl).
