Competition for cleanest town
2009-07-30
THE Cleanest Town competition has been running since 2001 to change behaviour, to raise awareness about waste, and educate citizens towards sustainable management practices. This includes creating community awareness about the benefits of a clean and healthy environment through effective management of pollution and waste practices. The competition also serves as an opportunity to acknowledge ongoing improvements in waste management initiatives undertaken by municipalities. This year, 22 of the 24 local municipalities in the Western Cape have entered the competition. The municipalities will be evaluated by a provincial adjudication panel composed of stakeholders from various government departments. Unannounced site visits to the municipalities will take place in the months of August and September to evaluate the cleanliness of town centres, low income residential areas, commercial and industrial areas, tourist attractions and public facilities such as schools, taxi ranks and waste disposal sites. The physical condition and general cleanliness of a town accounts for 40% while the support systems and municipal waste management initiatives account for 60% of the evaluation mark. The winning municipality will receive R120 000 for waste management, first runner-up R60 000, second runner-up R40 000, and most improved R30 000.
