DURING the month of August, six local schools will be among 90 schools participating in the schools arts festival at the Artscape Theatre Centre.
They are Klein Nederburg Senior Secondary, New Orleans Secondary, Mbekweni Primary, Paarl Girls’ High, Paarl School of Skills and Hillcrest Primary.
More than 2 800 learners, the youngest being six years old have registered to participate in this years Artscape School Arts Festival.
During the first two weeks, about 12 schools will perform items including various dance forms, singing, bands, choirs and solo items.
The festival builds up to a grand finale and the 15 most promising festival performances will be invited to perform at a gala concert on 28 August.
As the festival is the precursor for the prestigious Artscape High Schools Drama Festival, from 7 to 12 September at the Artscape Arena, it does not include drama items on the programme.
The Ibhabhatane Project is entering a colourful display of 300 art works by Grade 10 to Grade 12 learners from the Western Cape Education Department’s Arts Focus Schools.
The best presentation will be acknowledged at a special award ceremony on 18 August. The exhibition will be open to the public daily and in the evenings for theatre-goers.
The top 15 schools selected for the gala concert will be announced on 25 August.
