Somalian shot in robbery

A SOMALIAN shopkeeper was shot twice by gunmen outside his mobile shop in New Rest, Wellington, on Saturday morning. Three robbers burst into the container shop owned by two Somalians in Drakensberg Street in Wellington on Saturday morning at 11:30, demanding cash and airtime vouchers. “My partner, Isman Muse Alli, was on his way out of the container when three African men approached him asking for money and cell phone vouchers,” Yasin Sheikh-Abobakar (32) said. “One of them took out a fire-arm and demanded money. That was the first time that I saw them. “My partner ran back into the container and when he tried to resist, he was shot in the right knee. When he ran away, he was shot in the buttocks. “They also demanded money and airtime vouchers from me and fired a shot at me. Luckily it missed. “I told them to take the money (R1800) and R3000 worth of airtime. “The people outside started to shout when they realised what was happening, and then the robbers fled the scene,” he said. “This is frustrating. In the last two years we have reported more than 30 theft and robbery cases. And it is still happening. “We as Somalians do not receive any help from the local government or from the local people,” he said. Alli (29) is still recuperating in Paarl Hospital. No-one has yet been arrested in connection with the attack, which came barely 12 hours after another attack on Alli. On Friday night he was also held at gunpoint and robbed of various cartons of cigarettes. A spokesperson for the police said that the attack should not be seen as an incident of xenophobia, but was basically an attack on a soft target.
