LOCAL student Lungisa Zweni has been chosen to represent South Africa in the Vodacom soccer team that participated in an international soccer tournament in Germany, during the recent college holidays.

The 24-year old Lungisa, a student at Boland College in Paarl, caught the attention of the Mother City soccer team selectors during a match that he played for his local club, Mbekweni Sundowns.

The selectors asked him to come and play for their team that comprises of various players in the Cape Town area.

The Vodacom junior team management saw him play for this side, contacted him and asked him to join the Vodacom team and South African junior soccer team to participate in an international junior soccer tournament hosted by Germany.

He joined the team at the Cape Town International Airport the very next day.

“To know that I would be participating against my international peers and be given the opportunity to showcase and match my talent against them was a dream come true,” Lungisa said.

When the two squads arrived in Germany they were merged into one team known as the Junior South African Vodacom team.

They played four games in total during the tournament - against the junior sides of Argentina, Brazil, Germany and the Czech Republic.

The side started off well and won their first match against Argentina, but unfortunately were outplayed in their match against the Brazilians.

However the Junior South African Vodacom team ended the tournament well by drawing against Germany and Czech Republic.

“It was the best experience of my life,” Lungisa added. “To be in the company of such top-quality players, to see the training facilities, playing against other countries and their junior players and experiencing the culture and hospitality of the Germans, was unforgettable. This opportunity I received will be etched on my mind for the rest of my life.”

Lungisa has been earmarked for great things in the future. Though his soccer future looks bright, he is also a dedicated student, currently focusing on completing his Human Resource Management studies.
