Consumers to judge top Paarl wines

CONSUMERS with a soft spot for Shiraz and Chenin Blanc will once again be able to participate in the annual consumer wine tasting presented by Paarl Vintners. Winetasting guilds and clubs, as well as individuals, are invited to come and pit their wits against the judges and cast their votes to identify the consumers’ choice on Friday 21 August. This year the tasting will be presented in the Cathedral Cellar at KWV’s cellar complex in Kohler Street, Paarl, at 19:00. Dave Hughes, well-known international and local wine judge, will conduct the tasting. Two panels of judges completed the official tasting of the wines entered for this year’s Santam Paarl Vintners Shiraz Challenge on Monday 20 July. The top six wines in the Chenin Blanc class and top ten in the Shiraz class were selected while the winning three in each category will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on Friday 28 August. The wines will be presented in a blind tasting and once the scores have been collected the wines will be unveiled. The winemakers of the various cellars will be present to introduce their wines. After the tasting a light meal and wine will be served and there will be ample opportunity to chat to the winemakers and discover all the undisclosed details about their wines. According to Sandra Lotz, CEO of Paarl Vintners, the Challenge celebrated its 13th anniversary this year, the third year that the Consumer Tasting is presented. “This tasting has become tremendously popular and guests enjoy the informative, yet relaxed presentation very much,” said Lotz.
