Problems with new houses in Mbekweni

TEN months ago beneficiaries were happy to get their new RDP houses in Project2 Mbekweni, Paarl. But now, things do not look so good, as some of the plots are smaller than the promised 160 square metres per plot, residents say. Some of them have been asked to sign forms so that the kitchen doors can be moved to the living room of the 40 square metre houses. Although there should be at least two metres between the units, some of the houses have been built too close to one another, which means some have been built over the building line. Nomthandazo Pokolo (42), mother of seven children, says: “I won’t have two doors in the living room. I have already made same changes in my house like plastering the inside of my house, which cost me money. No-one is explaining to me why my door has to be moved to the other side.” “It looks like the Municipality does not know what it is doing - why did they give me the house if there was something wrong with it? “I won’t sign anything unless all my expenses will be covered,” added Pokolo. May Carolissen, head of Communications at Drakenstein Municipality, denied that plot sizes had been reduced. “But some of the houses have been constructed over the building line.” “In Mlonji Street there are about 13 houses which are affected by this problem and it has been reported to the contractor. “They are in the process of adrdressing and correcting these cases in due course.”
