Boland athletes shine

THE 2009 CAA African Junior Championships took place in Mauritius last week, from 30 July to 2 August, with a total of eight members of the team being from the Boland region. These members were Raymond Julius (Paarl Athletics, Team Coach), Melissa Hewitt (Paarl Athletics, 100m 200m and 4x100m relay), Ethan Floris (Maties Athletics, 110m H and 4x100m relay), Shaun de Jager (Maties Athletics, 400m), Cornel Fredericks (Maties Athletics, 110mH, 400mH and 4x400m relay), Luvo Manyonga (Mbekweni Athletics, LJ), Willem le Roux (Maties Athletics, Decathlon) and Dr Harold Adams (Paarl Athletics, Team Doctor). The South African team won 22 medals and finished first on the medal tally, with Nigeria and Kenia second and third respectively. Boland Athletes brought honour to SA and the Western Cape by winning six medals at the CAA African Junior Championships. The star at the championships undoubtedly was Fredericks who won three gold medals in the 110m H, 400mH and the 4x400m Relay. The two Paarlites, Luvo (bronze in Long Jump, 7,49m) and Melissa (silver medal in 4x100m relay and a finalist in both the 100m and 200m races), also made their presence felt with top class performances. Floris was in the final in the 110mH and won a medal in the 4x100m relay. The 2009 CAA African Junior Championships are regarded as the showcase of junior talent in Africa and is a clear indicator of which athletes are likely to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games. The South African Team arrived in South Africa on Monday.
