Death of former mayor

A FORMER mayor of Paarl, Jack Lichtenstein, died recently in Sea Point at the age of 91. Lichtenstein, who matriculated at Gymnasium, worked all his life at the lumber merchants Rabinowitz & Berman in Paarl, While he was a director of Rabinowitz & Berman, he served as president of the SA Timber Trade Federation and the Boland Master Builders’ Association during his long career. He was involved with the Paarl Jewish congregation, served on the Paarl school board and was an active Rotarian and scout master. He became a town councillor in 1986 and served as mayor from 1991. He and his wife Lily (Berman), retired to Sea Point about ten years ago, where she passed away five years ago. He is survived by two children, Colin and Adèle, who live in Atlanta in the USA, and four grandchildren.
