Wellington stands its ground

ONE of the Cape’s most unusual wine competitions is the annual Terroir Wine Awards contest which is aimed at singling out the wines that are unique to a specific area. Entrants submit wines which they feel best reflect the soil and climate of one specific estate or vineyard. The three wines which received the highest scores of all were Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2005, Springfontein Jil’s Dune Chenin Blanc 2008 and Diemersfontein’s accredited BEE company Thokozani’s 2008 (red blend). Another proud Wellington winner is Doolhof who got the highest accolade for the top Malbec, the National Winner in the South African Wine Region in the category: Wine of Origin – Single Vineyard Estate - for their 2007 Doolhof Signatures. The grapes come from a small vineyard block on a rocky slope beneath Bains’s Kloof Pass that is windy and open to the elements. They were handpicked and the wine was matured in 50% new French oak for 14 months. Bosman Family Vineyards’ Old Bush Vine 2008 shone as the top Chenin Blanc in the area. The Wellington Wine Route consists of 25 members comprising three co-operative cellars, well-known estates and smaller boutique wineries.
