Housing in Groendal
2009-08-13
THE Stellenbosch Municipality has awarded the top structure tender for housing construction at Mooiwater in Franschhoek to the Mellon Housing Initiative. A total of 301 subsidised houses will be built at the last phase of 1000 houses of which 771 were completed during 2001/2002. Another phase, the redevelopment of the Langrug informal settlement adjoining the Mooiwater development will run concurrently. According to Lester van Stavel (Manager: New Housing), the architecture of the new houses will be adapted to the design of the previous houses. The footprint of the houses will be 40 square metres and consist of two bedrooms, an open plan kitchen/living space and a bathroom. The construction of the top structures will be completed in approximately twelve to fourteen months. Concurrent with this process is thefinalisation of all aspects regarding the beneficiaries and the approval of beneficiary subsidies by Provincial Government of the Western Cape. The total value of the project is approximately 26 million rand. The Municipality currently has a contractor on site repairing the damaged services where the 301 will be built. Also concurrent with the project is a consumer education programme that assists the new home owner in various aspects of home ownership. It is therefore imperative that the community takes ownership of the project and discourage perpetrators from vandalising the services and financially derailing the project.
