AS part of the Taalmuseum’s Language Week a traditional Zulu experience will be hosted by a member of the royal Zulu family, Princess Dr Gcwalisile Cynthia Zulu-Kabanyane, on Saturday 15 August at the Top Four Community Hall at 12:00 in Mbekweni.

Guests will experience the unique and different customs of the Zulu culture, such as song and dance, followed by a traditional lunch.

Guests should wear comfortable clothes as they will be sitting on grass mats and eating food from enamel plates with their hands.

On the menu is mouth-watering samp (also known as isitambu or umgqushu) cooked with sugar beans, and ‘ujeqe’ (steamed bread with stew or curry) as well as ‘umqombothi’ (a home brewed Zulu traditional beer made out of malt) or ‘amahewu’ (a traditional drink made out of refined maize).

The programme also includes an inspirational talk and a screening of the DVD “Crossing Rivers of Womanhood”, which tells the story of the traditional rights of passage of a Zulu girl’s journey into womanhood.

The event is in aid of the Methodist Church in Mbekweni. Arts and crafts made by women of Mbekweni will be on sale. Safe parking is available.

Tickets cost R80 and are available from Cynthia on 021-872-0607 or the Afrikaanse Language Museum on 021-872-3441.
