AN off-duty fireman’s relaxing afternoon with his family literally went up in flames on Sunday, when his house in Charleston Hill was almost gutted by fire. Felix Sabeko, who is based at the Paarl fire station, said that he and his family were watching television at approximately 18:15, when he realised that something was wrong. “I could smell that something was burning, and the next minute the house filled with smoke.” Being a trained fireman, Sabeko evacuated his family to safety and immediately phoned the fire department. He then tried to carry as many belongings as he could outside. With the quick response of the fire department, the fire was doused before spreading to the rest of the house, but the bedroom of one of Sabeko’s children was gutted. The rest of the house sustained extensive smoke and water damage. And that after Sabeko had recently completed renovation of the kitchen. * Three schoolchildren were left without school uniforms and books, after a fire destroyed their home on Dalweiding farm (formerly a dairy) opposite Fairyland. An unattended candle presumably caused the fire on Wednesday evening, destroying the entire contents of a family’s home. Now matriculant Patricia Cloete (17) of Northern Paarl High, and her siblings, Kuano (14) of New Orleans Primary and Jekayla (7) of Groenheuwel Primary, are scrambling to scrape together some school attire. Patricia says that she does not know how she is going to get back all her lost notes for her upcoming matric exams.
