Storm hits World Sailing Champs

STORM AVERY’S excellent achievement, to represent South Africa at the Mirror World Sailing Championships in Pwllheli, Wales, has deservedly bagged this Grade 6 learner of Paarl Boys’ Primary the Paarl Post/Supersport Let’s Play Sportstar of the Month award for August. To represent your country is one thing, but to do so at age 11 is a clear indication that Storm has a very bright sailing future ahead of him. Storm has been part of the youth sailing program at Theewaterskloof Sports Club for the last three years and has been excelling at sailing since day one. As a result, Storm and his skipper, Kuba Miszewski (whom Storm has been sailing with for the past 18 months), have been selected to represent South Africa at the International Sailing Championships in the UK. The official teams to represent RSA at the championships were selected based on strict selection criteria and ranking. Although a 70th place at the championships does not sound remarkable at first, it is obvious that Storm will climb the ladder in years to come, seeing that they competed against 103 other teams. Although Storm takes part in numerous other sports - including rugby, hockey, karate and cricket - he spends most of his weekends working on his sailing skills. It seems though, as if sailing is in the Avery blood, seeing that Storm’s grandfather, Michael, and both his parents, Craig and Belinda, are also big sailing enthusiasts. Managing to balance his academics with all these extramural activities, is a sign of determination and devotion, and will surely take Storm far.
