ATHLETICS SOUTH AFRICA hosted the 2009 Nedbank SA 10km Championships and 5km fun run on Saturday at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch.

More than 2000 athletes took to the streets to run on the roads of Stellenbosch.

Almost 30 athletes completed the 10km race in less than 30 minutes, making it one of the fastest races ever in South African history.

The 10km championship was won by Stephen Mokoka from Gauteng North in a time of 28:21. Stephen’s time was the fastest time ever run in Stellenbosch, improving the previous best time of Boy Soke in 2006 (28:39) with 18 seconds.

Stephen’s winning time was a mere 21 seconds away from the 10km SA record (28:00), set by Matthews Motshwareteu in 1980.

In the women’s race, Rene Kalmer from Central Gauteng won in a time of 32:39, a mere one second slower than the previous best time run in Stellenbosch, also run by Kalmer in 2008.

In the junior categories, the junior men’s race was won by Sithyilo Diko in a time of 29:45 while the junior women’s category was won by Sylvia Tshetlanyane in a time of 35:48.

Boland Athletics was represented at the championships by a team consisting of 46 athletes. The Boland Athletes who won medals, were Dominique Scott (junior women silver medal), Kosie Botha (master men 50+ silver medal), Thomas Moses (bronze
