TO mark the end of winter, the Hout Street Gallery in Paarl opens its Spring Show on Thursday 10 September, to run throughout the month until 30 September.

Paintings by a range of top South African artists will be on display, including existing collectors’ items and new works.

“We have put together a delight-ful show to celebrate the onset of spring,” says David Zetler, owner of the Hout Street Gallery.

They will be showcasing new work as part of the exhibition, which will include interesting abstracts, wonderful oils and mixed media pieces, in addition to the array of ceramics, sculptures, glass work, bronzes, functional art and creative jewellery that they offer. There are also three new flower studies works by Robin Mann. “Mann’s striking Tulips in a Vase, with its deep orange and red flowers, can only inspire you for the new season!”

Johannesburg artist Ann Lindsell-Stewart and landscape and still life specialist Jeffrey Appollis will also present new works.

“Fellow Paarl artist Dawid Toua will exhibit a selection of new paintings,” says Zetler.

Dawid has achieved marked success with his studies of figures, some of which are whimsical and others of a more serious nature.

“There will be a number of new oils from a master of the Cape scene, Kobus Louw, in which he demonstrates magnificent brush work to depict the streets of Cape Town and Paarl.”

Other exciting inclusions from South African icons are oils by Conrad Theys, an early work by the versatile May Hillhouse, some Frans Claerhout works in mixed media and an abstract piece by Maud Sumner. France Beyers from Stellenbosch will also show new work and there will be three new oils by Frederika Stokhuizen who will soon be launching a book.

“Abstract works form a significant part of the Spring Show and I am thrilled to have secured a small collection of paintings by Christo Coetzee, dating from the 1970s and 1980s. These are interesting in that they are most unusual and show ‘piercings’ of the paintings which form an integral part of the abstract design.

“The Spring Show presents a wonderful opportunity for South African art lovers to enjoy a visual feast of local talent,” concludes Zetler.
