Rugby heroes in debt
2009-09-10
THE assets of amongst others Springbok coach Peter de Villiers, are to be sold on auction, due to the collapse of the business, Sport Excellence Gymnasium. De Villiers, together with Gus van der Berg, Springbok rugby player Wayne Julies, Dr Jamie Claasen and Willie Small opened the gym at Berg River Park in Dal Josaphat in January last year, shortly before De Villiers was appointed Springbok coach. The gym, however, never took off, and has left the consortium in debt. A spokesperson for the legal firm HT de Villiers, confirmed that the gynasium had run into arrears for rental to Spearhead Properties. The auction of gymnasium equipment will take place on 18 September on site. * And Welbedacht wine farm, home to Springbok father and son rugby stars, Schalk Burger junior and senior, also had a scare recently, when Wellington producers of stainless steel wine tanks, Velo, took the bull by the horns and applied for a liquidation order of the Burger farm. Welbedacht Estate owes the company a tad more than half a million rand, but court proceedings were halted when the matter was settled out of court.
