TWO young men were handed down severe jail terms in record time this past week, after an attack on a French citizen.

The attack took place almost a month ago at a guesthouse between Simondium and Klapmuts, when two men overpowered Claudí Leroy, when she had gone outside to investigate a noise.

The men forced her into the building and threatened her with a knife, demanding valuables. During a scuffle she was stabbed in the arm.

The men packed a laptop, Canon camera, cellphone, jewellery and Leroy’s purse into shopping bags and led her outside. She then managed to break away from them, after which they fled.

When the police arrived on the scene, Leroy was able to give them a description of the two young men, and this corresponded with that of two men who had attacked and robbed farm workers on the nearby Klein Simonsvlei farm earlier that evening.

Further investigation led to the arrest of Gary Jacobs (23) and Glenton Cupido (20) the next day. Both men are from the area.

Klapmuts police officer, Const Justin America, followed up more information during which he came into possession of a ring which was amongst the goods which had been stolen at the guesthouse.

This and Leroy’s description of her attackers were the only concrete evidence which the police had against the suspects, but when they appeared in court, they immediately pleaded guilty to all charges against them.

A sentence of ten years, of which three years were suspended for five years, was handed down to Jacobs, while Cupido also received ten years, of which four years were suspended.

A spokesperson for the police applauded the sentence, saying that it was an excellent outcome in such a short time.
