RECENTLY my wife and I were awoken by the sound of breaking glass at about 01:30. In that half groggy state of sleep we thought it may have been at an absent neighbour’s home.
Taking the good advice of my wife I phoned the police instead of rushing out to investigate, knobkierie in hand and slippers on feet (getting too old for that type of gung-ho action).
The phone at the Paarl charge office was answered promptly and the officer on the other side was alert and efficient.
I explained the situation and gave them the address and they promised somebody would be along shortly.
Well that was an understatement – less than three minutes later the first of four bakkies arrived and our neighbourhood was crawling with men and women in blue.
They went over the wall – did a thorough check and reported that all was well.
I apologised for getting them out for nothing, but they said rather safe than sorry and no problem.
We are privileged to have men and women willing to serve without question – and with extreme professionalism and competence.
