Murder-free period shattered by bundu court
2009-09-17
ON Monday, Mbekweni police where pleased to announce that they had passed 72 days without a single murder in the area. This was very good news for an area which is generally ravaged by crime. “This is a clear indication that our policy of visible policing is paying off,” said station commander, Supt Cornelius Geldenhuys. But on Tuesday morning, their murder-free record was shattered, when the body, of Vuyani Mpemba (22) was discovered on an open space in Thembani Square. Mpemba had been beaten to death, presumably during the night. It is suspected that he was the victim of a bundu court, as he was a known thief in the area, and was behind bars for robbery last week. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident. Supt Geldenhuys has appealed to the public to come forward with any crime related information. “The public plays an important part in assisting us with fighting crime. All information is treated with strict confidentiality.”
