ALTHOUGH the Paarl Waterfront development could not result in the bid for housing one of the international soccer teams during next year’s 2010 Worldcup tournament, plans are still on track for this development to proceed in the near future. Roleplayers in the sporting world had joined them in this venture. At a mayoral committee meeting last week the management of the Paarl Waterfront Development Company (PWDC) told councillors that SA Rugby Legends and Investec International Rugby Academy had signed an agreement and that they had formed the International Sport Academy SA (ISASA). “This could lead to the establishment of one of the biggest sports academies in South Africa,” said Garth Adams, one of the directors of PWDC. “This will have huge benefits for sports development in the entire Drakenstein and Boland region. The focus will be on the development of youth from grassroots to high performance,” he added. “Negotiations on the relocation of the current sport clubs is still ongoing, but we had great progress. At this stage there are still outstanding matters to be resolved with Paarl Rugby Club. “It is our responsibility to relocate the clubs and at this stage it will cost us R25 million for the relocation to the Boy Louw Fields. “There is also a great chance that the Boland College sportfields in Paarl will be included in this sports hub at the Boy Louw Fields,” he said. The delegation of PWDC told the mayoral committee that all the studies had been completed and that they would receive the green light to proceed with the development in mid-November. Construction will begin late in 2010, after the relocation of the sport clubs.
