THINGS are going from bad to worse in Paarl. This is the concern expressed by residents after a woman was attacked in broad daylight in front of a house in Kloof Street, central Paarl.

The incident took place almost two weeks ago, after a well-known resident, Allison Bouckaert, had paid a visit to the home of her daughter.

When leaving the property at approximately 15:30 she was suddenly attacked by a neatly dressed Xhosa-speaking man.

“As if out of nowhere, he grabbed me and threw me against my car.

“He was trying desperately to grab my jewellery and even bit my fingers to get at my rings.

“But I was not going to simply give in and allow him to get away with this. I put up a struggle and cried for help.”

It was then that CJ le Roux heard her cries and went to her rescue. But when he approached, the attacker pointed a firearm at him and fled. All he had managed to steal from Bouckaert, was one of her rings.

The man fled down Kloof Street in the direction of Mill Street, and got into a waiting Isuzu bakkie with a CA registration which was parked there.

Le Roux contacted the police and followed the vehicle in his bakkie to the parking area of the Metropolitan Shopping Centre.

He saw the attacker and an European accomplice leave the vehicle.

The police arrived and an hour later a nd ambushed the attacker who had returned to the vehicle and attempted to drive away. To his surprise, he was quickly arrested.

Maliti Mlami appeared in court this week. The police are still searching for his accomplice.

“I am relieved that I am alive after this incident,” said Bouckaert, “but Paarl is definitely getting out of hand.”
