IF you’re yearning for a day in the countryside, where tranquility reigns and wine abounds, then mark your diary for Saturday 14 November (11:00 to 18:00) when the wine ward of Voor Paardeberg dons its glad rags for its annual festival.
The event takes place at the Visitors Centre on the David Frost Estate and promises activities for the entire family.
Now in its third year, the Voor Paardeberg Annual Wine Fair plays a major role to place this small wine ward firmly on the map.
The festival gives the visitor a chance to mingle and chat with the seven passionate producers who cultivate this untamed landscape.
Wines from Ayama, Bernheim Wines, David Frost Estate, Horse Mountain Wines, Oude Denneboom, Scali and Vondeling will all be on show at the festival.
The venue is perched on a rise overlooking the magnificent vistas of the mountains and the valley and is the perfect setting for this day out.
Entry includes free wine tasting (there are more than 40 wines you could taste) as well as an elegant crystal tasting glass.
A blind tasting competition could see you winning a weekend for you and your partner in the Voor Paardeberg during the 2010 harvest, so polish up your palate and you could become the lucky wine fundi of the day.
Apart from all the wine associated fun (swirling, tasting, spitting and swallowing) the “En Primeur” wine tasting means that you can taste and reserve wines from each producer prior to release.
Live music will cater for all tastes throughout the day and for the kids there are loads of activities, including pony rides, jumping castles and water fun. So bring along the kids’ bathing suits and sun block and enjoy a glass of wine while the children plays in a safe environment.
Dad (or mom!) can have a go at showing their putting skills on the custom-made putting green, one of the unique signatures on the David Frost Estate, and win fabulous prizes.
Signed bottles of David Frost wine are up for grabs. Bring your set of boules and enjoy a game with friends while you soak up the summer sun on this beautiful estate.
Mom can browse around the many stalls featuring crafts, organic & country food, cheeses, nuts and fruits, raw honey, olives and biltong as well as hearty dishes such as Cape Malay chicken curry and lamb pies, olives and olive products, amongst other well-priced local delicacies. Creating your own picnic from the delicacies on sale is part of the fun (no picnic hampers to be brought along from home).
Spend the day relaxing in this gem of a region where the beautifully appointed Visitors Centre beckons - just the place to laze away a summer Saturday afternoon.
Tickets are R100 per person (children under 18 free entrance).
