Five star athletics achievers awarded

BOLAND ATHLETICS held its annual Coca Cola 5-Star Achiever Award Function on Friday 18 September at the Picardie Guest-house in Paarl. Some of the guests who were present during the function were the new Western Cape Minister of Sport, Sakkie Jenner, who was also the guest speaker, and the three past Presidents of Boland Athletics, Jannie Momberg, Charles Beukes and Cornwal du Plessis. “Boland Athletics did exceptionally well during the 2009 athletics season,” said Pieter Lourens, Vice President of Boland Athletics. “As a result, a record amount of awards were issued to athletes, coaches, administrators, technical officials, event organisers, clubs, sponsors and members of the media during the 2009 Coca Cola 5-Star Function.” A total of 158 awards to Boland Athletics achievers at national and international level were issued by the Boland Athletics Board, of which 19 awards were 5-Star awards. The 5-Star award is the highest honour that can be bestowed on any member of Boland Athletics. Awards were handed to: * Athletes: Mzwandile Qashani, Luvo Maniyonga (4-Star awards, both of Mbekweni Athletics), Melissa Hewitt, Lionel Abrahams, Rushwahl Samaai, Christiaan Norman, Jean-Marie Senekal, Taahirah Cozain, Kuhltoom Gaidien, Quarta Wiese, Jan-Louw Kotze, Elsabe Rudolf, Francois de Jager and Moniqeann Lombaard (4-Star, all from Paarl Athletics). * Coaches: Raymond Julius (5-Star, Paarl Athletics), Brandon du Plessis, Thys de Vries, Louis Nienaber, Nico Louw, Lourens de Jongh, Pieter Kotze (4-Star, all of Paarl Athletics), Johan Oosthuizen (4-Star, Correctional Services) and Manelisi Adoons (4-Star, Mbekweni Athleltics). * Administrators: Brandon du Plessis, Shireen Paulse, Andre Jonker, Myrtle Apollis (4-Star, all of Paarl Athletics) and Nobenzeni Mini Royi (4-Star, Mbekweni Athletics). * Team management: Allison Kok, Andre Jonker, Shireen Paulse (4-Star, all of Paarl Athletics), Basil Jantjies (4-Star, Correctional Services), Jenifer Daniels (4-Star, Wellington Athletics) and Nobenzini Royi (4-Star, Mbekweni Athletics). * Best club: Paarl Athletics, Maties Athletics (both 5-Star), Ceres Athletics, Robertson Athletics, Wellington Athletics and Worcester Athletics (4-Stars). * Special category: Adam Kock (Athletics Alive), Kosie Botha (Correctional Services), Andre Dippenaar (Paarl Athletics), dr Terrence Jones (Paarl Athletics), Standard Bank (Paarl) and Thys de Vries (Paarl Athletics, al 5-Star awards).
