Maiden century for Paarl's Walters
2005-03-17
THE Novel Paarl team may have drawn their Boland Top Eight match against Paarl East at the Parys cricket grounds on Saturday, but an unbeaten century scored by the young Lee-Roy Walters was enough consolation for their supporters to go home with a warm feeling.
The visitors lost seven wickets in setting a target of 242 in 60 overs, while the hosts finished on 236/6 in a keenly contested encounter.
Paarl’s run chase was left too late, however, as Wesley Euley (52 4x4, 6x4) was the only other frontline batsman to impress.
Wicketkeeper Walters (103 not out) faced only 113 balls, hitting a six and 11 boundaries in his maiden century for Paarl.
After two successive half centuries in his previous two outings, the former Boys' High captain was particularly forceful on the front foot, but never failed to punish the short ball in his 94 run fourth wicket partnership with Euley.
An unbeaten 41 run seventh wicket partnership with the hard running Clint Philander saw Walters bringing his team within sight of the target, but clever bowling by Hilroy Paulse and Craig Abrahams (2/41) forced a draw.
Earlier, captain Jackie Daniels (72) top scored for Paarl East with two sixes and five boundaries, well supported by Zynodien Fredericks (35 not out), Roswen Jephta (34) and Garth Lewis (28).
Anwell Newman (3/22) was Paarl’s best bowler.
Paarl East II caused an upset at New Orleans with a four wicket victory against last season’s champions, after restricting Paarl II to 236/7 in 60 overs.
