Local paddlers shine

PADDLERS of Paarl Canoe Club have been chosen to represent the Western Cape Canoe Union at the 2009 Fish River Canoe Marathon taking place this coming weekend. This year’s SA K1 River Championships will be taking place on Friday and Saturday on the Fish River in the vicinity of Cradock, Eastern Cape. Canoeists chosen from Paarl Canoe Club, are (seniors) PW Basson, Heinrich Schloms, (u.18) Joseph Williams, (u.16) Nicholas de Villiers, (sub vet) Herbert Conradie, (sub grandmaster) Andre Rabie and (grandmaster) Giel van Deventer (Paarl CC). ) The canoeing ‘double-header’ raced on Saturday and Sunday on the 36 km section of the Breede River (downstream from Swellendam - the ‘Bontebok’ section), was won by Paarl’s PW Basson (2:30:20). Joseph Williams from Paarl won the junior section (u.18; 2:47:13), Nicholas de Villiers won the u.16 section, George Hall the Sub Masters (3:16:50) and Giel van Deventer the GrandMasters (3:04:12). Jemma Hofmeyer was second (3:02:51) in the Senior Women’s section and Francis Steyn (3:09:34) and Gavin Finch (3:19:51) were second and third in the Masters section respectively. Gerrit Jordaan and Mias van der Westhuyzen (3:09:08) were third in the K2 doubles. The Top Ten were as follows: (1.) PW Basson (Paarl CC; 2:30:20); (2.) Sean Rice (PCC; 2:38:40); (3.) Paul Marais (PCC; 2:38:50); (4.) Rory van Zyl (PCC; 2:41:24); (5.) Alasdair Glass (PCC; 2:41:25); (6.) Marius de Waal (OU; 2:43:04); (7.) Joseph Williams (Paarl; 2:47:13); (8.) Steve Botha (NAT; 2:47:42); (9.) Wesley Green (Stel; :47:44); (10.) Iain Glass (PCC; 2:50:54).
