Boland Safa to tackle soccer from next year
2005-08-25
THE process to establish the soccer body Safa Boland has received a healthy boost following a R30 000 grant from the Boland District Municipality.
Clarence Johnson, executive mayor of the Cape Winelands District Municipality, presented Safa Boland with the cheque during a soccer indaba that was held in Worcester over the weekend.
Boland soccer was accepted by Safa (South African Footbal Association) in 2004, and a new region called Safa Boland will come into effect in January next year.
Stakeholders from all the soccer fraternities within the Boland region converged at Brandvlei Correctional Services last week to discuss various important issues pertaining to the formation of Safa Boland.
Johnson pledged the commitment of the District Municipality towards soccer and the growth and transformation of the sport within the region.
He also gave the assurance that the Cape Winelands District Municipality would give the necessary financial support to Safa Boland.
Martin Neewat, a representative of Safa Western Province, spoke about the demarcation of WP and also gave a brief background on the rationale behind the formation of the six different regions of Safa in the WP.
The following days delegates broke into groups and discussed issues such as competition structures, growth and transformation, headquarters of Safa Boland, communication and staff compilation, football infrastructure, and funding to name but a few.
Many ideas were brainstormed and the outcomes of the commission will be formulated in a report, which will be compiled by an independent service provider who conducted the workshop.
Although specific outcomes were achieved at the workshop, no formal resolutions were accepted. It was however agreed that a strategic planning session will be held after a month, to streamline the process and to come up with a sustainable and realistic strategic plan for the next five years.
Safa Boland’s program for the next few months include roadshows to the relevant districts including a visit to Drakenstein on 20 September, a strategic workshop and the launch of all district areas as well as the launch of Safa Boland with the Annual General Meeting in October.
An audit will be conducted of all the roleplayers in the region and everybody involved in soccer, irrespective of how big or small, is requested to contact the Drakenstein district representative, Lutfie Hendricks (082-3394-041).
