Ratepayers owe R250 million

ON 31 August ratepayers owed the Drakenstein Municipality more than R250 million. This debt includes R638 664 by municipal staff, and R178 414 by municipal councillors, according to a report to the Western Cape government. The Municipality boasts a collection rate of 96,5%, but is concerned about the debts of R51 million for rates, R48 million for refuse collection, R40 million for electricity and R47 million for water, R29 million for sewerage as well as another R22 million for outstanding rental. Debt management actions include the blocking of pre-paid electricity sold (recovering arrears on a percentage basis), disconnecting of electricity supply, handing over of arrear accounts to attorneys for legal collection (except indigent debtors), downpayment agreements and the rolling out of indigent grants, a spokesperson of the Municipality said.
