Armed robbery rocks Franschhoek

Armed robbery rocks Franschhoek

2009-10-15

ANOTHER armed robbery rocked the sleepy tourist town of Franschhoek yesterday morning.

Two staff members of the Pink Geranium nursery, on the doorstep of the town, were attacked by armed men shortly after the day had started for business at 08:15 on Wednesday morning.

They were locked up in the kitchen while the robbers emptied the tills.

Only once the men had fled did one of the employees phone the emergency number of the police, 10111 with a cellphone.

Members of the Franschhoek police freed the woman shortly thereafter and a massive manhunt was launched for the five fugitives who had fled on foot in the direction of the Berg River. They had escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, as well as cellphones.

No-one was injured in the robbery.

Anyone with any information can contact Insp Leon Jacobs at 021-876-8061.

At the time of going to print, no arrest had yet been made. The search continues.

* The police of Klapmuts have warned women to beware, following four rapes during the past two weeks.

Although the suspects in these cases have been arrested, the police want the public to be very vigilant.

Women are especially warned not to walk alone at night and to avoid deserted and open areas. When at home, do not open doors to strangers and avoid places of ill repute, such as illegal shebeens.

In the case of a rape, victims must immediately report the crime to their local police, to speed up the investigation and to receive the necessary medical care.

The Klapmuts police station can be contacted at 021-875-8000.
