Paarl Mall hit by crime
2009-10-15
THE Paarl Mall has once again been staggering under the onslaught of criminals, hitting a jewellery store for the third time. On Tuesday evening thieves gained access to the Mall through the roof. They cut through the roof plates with metal cutters and then disarmed the alarm system to gain entry to Viljoen’s Jewellers. They stole various items of jewellery, before disappearing without a trace. Another great concern is the sudden spate of vehicle thefts. On Sunday a bakkie was stolen in broad daylight in the parking area of the mall. The owner had parked her White Ford Courier bakkie near the central entrance of the mall at approximately 11:20, but when she returned half an hour later, there was no sign of the vehicle. The car guards claimed that they had not seen her park the vehicle and thus did not take note of it. There was no sign of a forced entry, such as broken glass. Although the parking area is equipped with security cameras, the cameras had only captured the bakkie parking, and not the theft. Two weeks ago a Fiat Uno was also stolen in the parking area of the mall, also in broad daylight and with the presence of car guards in the vicinity. And shortly after this, a motor vehicle was broken into, also in the parking area of Paarl Mall, and a large amount of money was stolen.
