A WOMAN came across the body of her husband shortly after he had been killed in a horror crash on the N1 motorway outside Paarl. The incident took place shortly after 22:20 on Monday evening, when a Land Rover travelling in the direction of Cape Town collided with a construction roller parked on the verge of the road. Jannie Brits (43) allegedly lost control of his vehicle at high speed in the southbound lane, colliding head-on with the giant roller. The roller, which was being used as part of the upgrading of the N1 motorway, was in a stationary position between the north and southbound carriageways, where the driver had chosen to spend the night in the cockpit. The Land Rover spiralled out of control, only coming to a standstill about 60 metres from the place of impact. Pieces of the wreckage were flung more than 100 metres away from the vehicle. Brits died on impact when he was flung out of his vehicle. The driver of a Toyota Conquest who had witnessed the accident, stopped on the N1, causing another vehicle to collide with his vehicle. No one was seriously injured here. According to sources, Brits was on his way back from Worcester to his home in Brackenfell. His wife was travelling on the same route with a friend, when they came upon the horrific crash scene. The driver of the roller who had been rudely awakened, was treated for shock. The N1 southbound carriageway was closed for hours while the wreckage was cleared and traffic had to be redirected through Paarl.
