CHILDREN who have dropped out of school in Mbekweni are being traced by the area’s police social crime prevention unit and led back to learning.

Capt Stoza Wambi and Constables Lungi Mqakelana and Khanya Nombewu have, since the beginning of this year, visited the homes of children between seven and 16 years old who had been enrolled, but never arrived at school.

“In co-operation with the department of education, we managed to get the list of all scholars and their addresses,” Const Nombewu said.

“Visits were paid to all scholars whose names appear on the list. It was discovered that some parents were aware that their children were no longer at school, but had lost control over them.

“We interviewed the children and established that substance abuse, peer pressure and lack of morality were the reasons for such behaviour.”

Mbekweni Police monitored the children and encouraged them to get back to school.

The project called “Read against crime” was introduced, where the police appealed for donations of books, CD’s and videos.

Donations are being forwarded to the Mbekweni library, and will be introduced to learners at a launch on September 20.

“We believe that the morality and illiteracy problem will be addressed. Matriculants will be able to produce better results in bigger numbers.

“Those who decide to further their education at tertiary level will have the necessary information nearby,” Const Nombewu said.

Members of the public or business sector wanting to assist, can reach the constables on 868-3036.
