2009-10-29

LOCAL schools recently participated in the GCIS Sanlam national schools debate on the theme of poverty reduction in South Africa, using the State of the Nation Address as basis for the debate.

The district participants were from Luckhoff Secondary, Wellington Secondary, Desmond Tutu High, Paarl Girls’ High, Huguenot High and Worcester Secondary.

The district winner, a learner from Worcester Secondary School, Melody Spruyt, showed outstanding performance and indicated passion and hope for the youth of our country.

One learner from the Drakenstein Municipality, Thobeka Nkabinde from Huguenot High, was also selected for the provincial round of the debate and indicated that youth can indeed be a great force and can show our country clear direction in reducing poverty and create a healthier society.

They will take part in the provincial debate that will be held against schools from the Eden as well as the Central Karoo District.

The national debate will be held in Pretoria and the national winners will have the opportunity to meet the President of our country, Jacob Zuma, and give him some thoughts and ideas on “How young people can contribute in reducing poverty and building a better South Africa”.

They will also be invited to the opening of the parliament in 2010.
