Training in hospitality
2009-10-29
FOLLOWING two months of intensive hospitality training by Gregory and Delphine Johannes, well-known food, wine and hospitality industry experts, a group of 13 trainees were finally handed their certificates on 20 October. The ceremony was held at the Ikhwezi Community Centre in Mbekweni. The month-long intensive training came as a result of the realisation by the municipality’s tourism division that in order to maintain its high quality standards and to continue competing with the very best food and wine tourism regions of the world, the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) needed to put its purse where its mouth is and to provide quality service training for new industry entrants. “This has been important for us,” explained Councillor Chrissie Brink of the CWDM, “as these newly qualified trainees will now return into the industry more confident of themselves and ready to offer higher quality service to our visitors, giving them reason to stay longer in our region, return to their homes to spread the good word about our service standards or, even better, become repeat visitors to the Cape Winelands.” The training program focussed on areas like telephone skills/reception, customer care, kitchen/personal hygiene, menu compilation, costing/pricing, time management, food presentation, and catering methods. The initiative was also aimed at supporting the development of a diversified, resilient and sustainable district economy and tourism product based on strong SMME and BEE participation in order to eradicate poverty.
