COMMUTERS were shocked to see the body of a motor-cyclist lying next to the Parys Road in Paarl on Friday morning, during rush hour. At 07:45, Jacobus Hoffman (49) was hit by a truck, barely one kilometre from his workplace at the electricity department of the Drakenstein Municipality. According to eye-witnesses, a construction vehicle turned onto the Parys Road out of Carolina Road, right in front of the motor-cyclist. The truck driver had evidently not seen the oncoming motor cycle. Hoffman sustained serious head injuries and died on the scene. The help of Pastor Esri Malan of the Bikers’ Church was called in, who in turn notified and consoled Hoffman’s wife, Mariaan, for the rest of the day. Malan said that it was a tragedy that so few motorists take note of motor-cyclists on the road. “Accidents like this can be avoided if motorists were more alert to their surroundings.” Hoffman, who lived in Kuil’s River, had worked as a senior electrician at the Drakenstein Municipality for seven years. He is survived by his wife and daughter Jani (17).
