Grandmother arrested

THE grandmother of an 18-month-old girl who died after being repeatedly raped, has been arrested. The little girl, Laura-Lee Groenewald, was pronounced dead on her arrival at the TC Newman Hospital in Paarl East in March. She had been taken there by Quinton Solomons, who had been living with Laura’s grandmother, Gertrude Solomons (41), who also cared for the child at her home in Glass Street. He told medical staff that the child had a “stomach ache”. But at the post mortem, it was discovered that the young child had been raped and sodomised. After further investigation by an organised crime unit from Cape Town, Solomons was arrested. The child was under his supervision while her grandmother was at work. Groenewald, who worked at an old-age home in Paarl, is now being charged as an accessory in her granddaughter’s murder.
